About Iyengar Yoga

B.K.S. Iyengar has been practicing and teaching for over 70 years. In 1966 his first book, Light on Yoga, was published. Often referred to as “the bible of yoga,” it has been translated into 17 languages, making yoga truly universal. Recognized as one of the premier yogis responsible for introducing yoga to the West, the Iyengar style of yoga is one of the most widely practiced form of yoga in the world today.

They have passed a rigorous standardized assessment by the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States (IYNAUS) and maintain ongoing training, practice, and commitment to the Iyengar method. Teachers passing assessment must meet standards in three categories: a demonstrated practice of poses, a written exam, and Iyengar Yoga Teacher Certification Markdemonstrated teaching skills in order to be granted a certification credential. Only teachers who have passed an introductory level or higher assessment, and who maintain good standing, may use the term Iyengar Certified Teacher and are allowed to use the official Iyengar Certification Mark.

Iyengar Yoga emphasizes form and technique through postural alignment for safety and the performance of poses. Clarity of instruction highlights the physical actions required to achieve a specific reaction in each pose and through the sequencing of poses within a class and within the session. This teaching environment introduces poses to the student in a structured manner. By establishing an experiential knowledge of fundamental movements and resulting actions in basic poses, students gain an understanding that these 'fundamentals' are applicable to all subsequent poses as they continue to practice and study yoga.

Teachers demonstrate, instruct, and correct poses by first introducing the name of the pose in English and/or in Sanskrit, providing physical demonstration and verbal instructions on the actions in each pose. Students learn how to use props: blocks, belts, and blankets, to attain the pose based on their individual needs. Teachers assist students to find proper postural alignment with verbal instruction and/or physical correction. This method enhances the student's awareness of how to use their bodies intelligently, on and off the mat.
